McHenry County ZIP Coverage
The county plan identifies 24 ZIPs that touch McHenry County. The principal post office column below is a postal city, not a claim that each address lies inside that municipality. Asterisks mark ZIPs with only a small county portion or a principal postal city outside McHenry County.

This is geographic coverage, not a resident count. Confirm one delivery address with USPS, then use the correct government custodian for the physical location.
Postal Cities Cross McHenry County
A postal city is a mail label. It does not set municipal, township, or county jurisdiction. Barrington Hills and Port Barrington show the issue clearly because local geography meets postal and county borders. Fox Lake appears in the Spring Grove area. The Woodstock postal area includes Bull Valley, Greenwood, and Wonder Lake as well as Woodstock.
For records, ask two separate questions: which city name does USPS accept, and which government had authority over the parcel or event? A permit may belong to a village even when mail uses another city. A deed and tax card belong to McHenry County only when the parcel is physically within the county.
McHenry County ZIP Exceptions
ZIP 60039 is for Crystal Lake PO boxes. It should never be treated as a situs, or physical property, address. Genoa 60135, Hampshire 60140, and Garden Prairie 61038 touch only a small part of McHenry County. A ZIP code directory result for those numbers needs an address-level check before any county record search begins.
Boundary check. A matching ZIP does not prove that an address lies in McHenry County or inside the postal city's limits.
Broad shared areas create another trap. McHenry 60050 and 60051 repeat several community names. The correct five-digit code depends on the particular delivery address, not merely the village name.
Verify McHenry County ZIP Delivery
The USPS ZIP Code Lookup offers three useful modes. By Address accepts a company when relevant, street, city, state, and ZIP. By City & State returns postal information for that place. Cities by ZIP accepts one five-digit code. USPS verifies postal formatting and association, not that a named person or business occupies the location.
| USPS mode | Input | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| By Address | Street, city, state, ZIP; company optional | Validate one delivery address |
| By City & State | City and state | Find accepted ZIP choices |
| Cities by ZIP | Five-digit ZIP | Check accepted postal-city names |
Save the standardized result, but keep county and municipality in their own fields. Postal validation is the first check, not the final resident search.
Find McHenry County Records by ZIP
No inspected county property portal publishes a full resident list by ZIP. Instead, use the ZIP to normalize a known address or confirm a supplied voter. Then move to the parcel or record system that answers the actual question.
- Confirm the five-digit ZIP and postal city in the USPS lookup.
- Enter the house-number range, street, and city in DEVNET. Its Address Search has no dedicated ZIP field.
- Use Athena to confirm the parcel, PIN, map location, and county context.
- For a known person, enter name, birth date, five-digit ZIP, street number, and selected street in the Illinois voter verifier.
- If the task narrows to a road, continue with the McHenry County street directory.
A voter match confirms the details supplied for one registration. It does not return a ZIP-wide roster, and a non-match can reflect a move, inactive status, protected address, or postal mismatch.
McHenry County ZIP Search Fields
Each portal treats postal geography differently. This comparison prevents a ZIP code directory search from promising a filter that the official system does not have.
| Source | Fields or key | Result |
|---|---|---|
| DEVNET Address | House Number Low/High, Street Name, City | Tax and parcel cards, not ZIP-wide results |
| Athena / PlanDev | Parcel, subdivision, address, owner, map tools | Parcel and layer context |
| Illinois voter verifier | Name, birth date, five-digit ZIP, street number and name | Supplied-person confirmation |
| USPS | Address, City & State, or Cities by ZIP | Postal validation |
| Census ZCTA | Statistical geography | Approximation, not delivery boundary |
Property work should preserve the PIN and legal description. Those keys stay useful when the city label or street spelling changes.
Notary Records Use City and ZIP
The Illinois Secretary of State's notary search is a useful example of a statewide record that can be narrowed by place without becoming a resident directory. The official notary portal accepts city and ZIP information for commission searches.
The captured form shows how ZIP works as one filter beside a name or city. A commission record confirms an official filing role, not a current home or every person in that postal area.
Old Woodstock Addresses Need Translation
Postal normalization cannot fix a historic street name by itself. Woodstock's 1914 directory identifies Lumber Street as today's East Judd, Dietz Street as East Jackson, and Fruit Alley as Greenlee. It also describes old numbering bases and 100-number blocks. A modern ZIP paired with a modern street can therefore miss an older directory entry.
For family history, store the old and new street names together. Add the directory year, nearby cross streets, and number range. Then compare the historic entry with a parcel legal description, deed party, or newspaper item rather than forcing the old address into a modern postal form.
McHenry County ZIP Boundary Terms
ZIPs are delivery routes, while city and county limits set government jurisdiction. Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, or ZCTAs, are statistical approximations. None should replace an address-level USPS check or a parcel map. The McHenry County ZIP code directory is most useful as a narrowing tool when these terms remain distinct.
- ZIP and ZIP+4
- A ZIP is the five-digit delivery area; ZIP+4 narrows mail to a smaller segment.
- PO-box ZIP
- A code assigned to post-office boxes rather than physical street delivery, such as 60039.
- Unique ZIP
- A code assigned to one organization or site with enough mail volume; none was verified in the county research.
- Carrier route
- A postal delivery path within a ZIP, not a municipal boundary or public resident list.
Use the postal code to find the right address form. Use the parcel and office jurisdiction to find the right public record.
